Syllabus

Weekly Expectations

Throughout the year, you will be practicing interdependence with your peers using cooperative learning techniques. You'll be assigned individual tasks and learn how to delegate tasks while working in a group. You will learn how to cooperate, compromise, tolerate, and assist others in life. If you feel like your homework load is too much, please contact your teacher. I would be more than happy to discuss it with you.

Language Arts

We will be using the district-approved literacy program, Wonders, and also other supplementary materials such as Scholastic Scope Magazines. The Wonders program encompasses all aspects of our Language Arts curriculum such as guided reading, grammar, spelling, and writing. One of the goals in 6th grade is to expand your mental lexicon by teaching you new vocabulary words. Our Wonders curriculum gives you a new set of eight vocabulary words each week to help accomplish this goal.

Every Friday you'll take a Wonders test to assess the comprehension strategies and skills you've learned in class. In addition, you'll be quizzed over your vocab words for the week. It's imperative that you're at school every Friday for testing. If you will be gone, please let me know so we can plan accordingly.

Math

Sixth Grade follows the New Utah Core Standards for Mathematics by using Ready Classroom. This program incorporates an online component with homework individualized to your needs. You will explore mathematical ideas, number sense, fractions, decimals, percents, geometry, measurement, evaluating expressions, integers, graphing equations, and data. Each lesson builds upon the previous lesson and increases in difficulty. Our class discussions are the best tools to help you succeed in math. Missing multiple days of math lessons in class can cause gaps in understanding. This can feel discouraging and possibly cause you to fall behind.

Practice iReady at home. This is your HOMEWORK. These lessons are tailed to your individual needs which gives you the instruction you need.

Sign up for Khan Academy's 6th-grade Math course. Khan Academy will provide additional support by having you watch videos and complete mini assignments to assess your understanding.

Science

This year we will be exploring science phenomena using hands-on activities and engineering practices. Some of the topics we will cover include ecosystems, weather patterns, atoms, and various space topics. It is critical that you are here every day to learn the material. Almost all activities will be accomplished in class.

Social Studies

Sixth Grade is a time to explore our world through its cultural and physical diversity. We will be studying World Geography, Ancient History, and Modern World History. You can expect projects occasionally in this area to assist in your learning. You will often be required to produce maps, timelines, charts, graphs, oral presentations, and research work.
